Planning your sand bed

To work out how much sand you need, multiply the length and width of your aquarium and decide on a depth. A shallow bed of 2 to 3 cm is easy to keep clean and suits most reef tanks, while burrowing fish such as some gobies and wrasses appreciate a deeper bed. Aragonite dissolves slowly and helps buffer pH and hardness, which suits marine tanks and hard-water fish such as African rift lake cichlids. It is not a good choice for soft-water fish or for planted tanks that need acidic conditions, so check your livestock’s needs before ordering.
