Building your rockwork

Plan the layout on a towel beside the tank before anything goes in, then place these flat-bottomed pieces directly on the glass and add sand around them afterwards, so burrowing fish and invertebrates cannot undermine the base. Leave gaps and caves for water to flow through and keep rock off the back glass. Reef epoxy or putty helps bond upper layers to the foundation for extra stability.

Rinse or soak the rock before use, build on the aquarium floor or a stable base so it cannot topple, and test water parameters as a new aquascape settles.
