Dry rock, not live rock

Because this rock is quarried on land rather than collected from the sea, it arrives dry and carries none of the organisms found on live rock. That means no unwanted hitchhikers, but it needs time to build up beneficial bacteria, so cycle the tank with a bacteria starter or a piece of established rock before adding livestock. As natural reef rock it is calcium-based, which tends to raise pH and hardness in freshwater, so it suits hard-water fish such as African cichlids better than soft-water species. Pieces are natural shapes, so sizes vary.

Good to know

Rinse or soak the rock before use, build on the aquarium floor or a stable base so it cannot topple, and test water parameters as a new aquascape settles.
