When and how to replace

Change the blade when it starts to skip over algae rather than lifting it cleanly, or when you see nicks, burrs or rust spots along the edge, as a damaged edge can scratch glass. Having two blades lets you keep one in use and one ready, which is handy for reef tanks where coralline algae builds up quickly. Keep the blade away from the silicone seams in the corners, which a sharp edge can cut. After scraping, rinse the blade in fresh water and let it dry before storing it.

Use steel blades on glass only, never on acrylic, and rinse and dry the blade after use to keep it sharp.
