How much you need

A 3L pack covers a 60 x 30cm floor only about 1.7cm deep, so it works best as a dark root layer beneath gravel, as the full substrate in a nano tank, or as a contrasting area within a larger layout. For a full 5cm bed in a 60cm tank you would need about three packs. Volcanic grains can be rougher than rounded sand, so for bottom-dwellers such as corydoras that sift with their barbels, keep a smooth sandy area too. Once plants are established, root tabs placed near heavy feeders keep them growing well.

Good to know

Rinse the substrate before use to remove dust, and add it before filling the aquarium.
