Choosing wattage and placement

Pick the 15 W lamp for smaller terrariums and the 26 W lamp for larger or taller tropical set-ups, where the UVB has further to travel. A 5.0 output suits many forest-dwelling geckos, lizards and amphibians, while desert species usually need a stronger UVB source. Fit it in a reflector dome where possible, and remember that ordinary glass and most plastics block UVB, so the lamp must not shine through a glass lid.

Good to know

Fit the lamp over the basking area at the distance given on the pack, run it on a 10 to 12 hour daytime cycle and replace it when the pack advises, as UVB output fades before the visible light does.
