Setting it up

Fit the filter fully submerged in a back corner, with the outlet just below the surface so the returning water ripples it and helps oxygen exchange. Turn the flow down for slow swimmers such as bettas or for delicate plants, and up for busier community tanks. On a new set-up, give the sponge a few weeks to build up beneficial bacteria before adding many fish, and avoid cleaning the filter and doing a large water change on the same day.

Good to know

Unplug before maintenance, rinse the sponge in old tank water rather than tap water so the good bacteria survive, and never run the filter out of water.
