Choosing and fitting tubes

These are standard T8 tubes, so the wattage tells you the length: the 18 W tube is about 60 cm, the 30 W about 90 cm and the 36 W about 120 cm. Match the tube to the fittings in your hood or light unit rather than to the length of the tank. On its own, the actinic blue light gives the deep, cool look of an open reef and makes coral colours glow, but it is not very bright, so for strong lighting Sera recommends pairing it with Blue Sky tubes. A common layout is to alternate blue and white tubes across the tank and run the blue a little longer at each end of the day for a dawn and dusk effect. Fluorescent tubes slowly lose output even while they still light up, so replace them about once a year, changing one at a time to avoid shocking corals.
