Choosing the right tube

T8 tubes are sized by wattage, so start by reading the wattage and length printed on your old tube or in your hood’s manual. The 15W tube is 45cm long; the 18W and 30W tubes are the standard T8 lengths for those ratings, roughly 60cm and 90cm, so they only fit fittings made for them. A T8 lamp needs a matching fluorescent fitting with the correct ballast, so it cannot go into a socket meant for LED strips. The red and blue spectrum gives a slightly warm, pinkish look on its own; many aquarists pair it with a daylight tube for a more natural appearance. Run the lights for around eight to ten hours a day on a timer to keep plants growing without encouraging algae, and replace tubes every year or so, as their output fades before they fail. In terrariums it helps plants grow but is not a UV-B source, so reptiles still need a dedicated UV lamp.
