Preparing and using it

This substrate suits rainforest and other humid terrariums, for species that need a damp floor such as tropical frogs and other rainforest animals. The 650 g block expands to about 8 litres once it has soaked up water, so measure the floor of your terrarium and the depth you want before deciding how many packs to buy. Break it up in a bucket, add water gradually and leave it to swell, then squeeze out any excess so it feels moist rather than wet. To prevent waterlogging, Sera recommends laying a thin drainage layer of Siporax first, covering it with filter wool and spreading the soil on top. Mist the surface regularly to keep humidity up, and remove droppings and uneaten food as you spot them. Replace any patches that become compacted or start to smell sour.
