Setting it up

Before buying, compare the flow rate printed on the box with your aquarium size; as a rough guide, the filter should turn over the tank volume several times an hour. Mount it low enough that the intake stays below the waterline, even after evaporation, and point the outflow along the front glass so water circulates through the whole tank. Gentle swimmers such as bettas may need the flow angled towards the glass to soften the current. Run it for a few weeks before adding many fish so good bacteria can build up.

Good to know

Unplug before maintenance, rinse the sponge in old tank water rather than tap water so the good bacteria survive, and never run the filter out of water.
