What to check before buying

Make sure your sump’s sock holder takes 4 inch socks, as the plate is sized for that diameter and will not sit properly in larger or smaller socks. It quietens the splash where water lands in the sock; gurgling higher up the drain pipe is a separate issue, usually tamed by adjusting the overflow or gate valve. Filter socks clog quickly in a reef, so swap in clean ones regularly and move the silencer across each time. A sock close to overflowing is a sign it is overdue for a change.
