How testing works

Each test needs only a small water sample, the photometer and a fresh sealed disk that holds pre-measured reagents. Disks are single use and come in two types, one for freshwater and one for saltwater or reef water, so stock the type that matches the water you test most. A disk reads all of its parameters together in about two minutes; you cannot run just one test on it. Between them the disks cover nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate, carbonate and general hardness, pH, magnesium and calcium, with ammonia reported as total ammonia nitrogen. Because the meter reads the colour change itself, there is no chart to interpret, and results appear with a matching API product suggestion, which makes it practical for shop counters and busy fish rooms.
