Taking an accurate reading

To test, hold the hydrometer below the surface and let it fill fully, then lift it out and stand it on a flat surface. Tap it gently to dislodge any air bubbles clinging to the pointer, as they can distort the reading, and read the scale at eye level. Rinse it thoroughly in fresh water afterwards so salt crystals do not build up and drag on the pointer. Many marine keepers aim for a specific gravity of around 1.020 to 1.025 in fish-only tanks and 1.024 to 1.026 in reef tanks. Check salinity regularly, top up evaporation with fresh water rather than salt water, and compare readings now and then against a second instrument.
