Building a stable hardscape

Before the rock goes in, you can test for minerals that harden water: drip a little vinegar onto a dry piece, and if it fizzes, expect it to raise hardness and pH over time, which matters for soft-water fish and shrimp. Build on a firm base by resting heavy pieces directly on the tank floor or on a plastic grid before adding substrate, so fish cannot dig underneath and topple them. Layered stones look most natural when the bands all run in the same direction, so align them as you stack. Leave gaps between rocks for water to flow and for easy cleaning.

Rinse each piece before use, plan the layout on the empty tank floor first, and check water hardness after adding new stone, as some rocks can raise it slightly.
