Getting a true reading

Let the hydrometer float freely in a sample jar or a calm corner of the tank, then tap it gently so no air bubbles cling to the glass, as bubbles make it ride higher and read too high. Water density changes with temperature, so note the thermometer reading at the same time and test at your usual tank temperature. Check salinity at least weekly. Evaporation removes only fresh water, so a slowly rising reading usually means you should top up with fresh RO water rather than adding more salt mix. Being glass, it is fragile, so store it in a padded box where it cannot roll off a cabinet.
