How to use the cones

These are the cones of the black alder (Alnus glutinosa), gathered from European trees. Shrimp and soft-water fish keepers often add them because, besides gently conditioning the water, they slowly break down and grow a film of microorganisms that shrimp graze on. Rinse them first; they may float for a day before sinking. Start with one or two cones in a small tank and add more only after checking pH over a few days, as the effect is gradual. In very hard, strongly buffered water the pH drop will be small. Replace cones once they turn soft and start to fall apart.

Good to know

Add a few cones at a time and monitor pH, as the water may take on a light amber tint.
