Placing a narrow-beam lamp

A 12° beam is very tight, so the heated area stays small: hung about 30cm above the basking spot, the lamp lights a patch only around 6cm across, and at 50cm roughly 10cm. That makes it a good choice for warming one flat stone or branch while the rest of the terrarium stays cooler, giving your reptile a clear temperature gradient to move along. For a larger animal that needs to warm its whole body at once, a wider-beam lamp or a second spot is a better fit. Measure the temperature at the basking surface itself and adjust the hanging height until it suits your species.
