Choosing and preparing gravel
The range covers coloured gravels with codes such as C1, C2, C3, C10, C12, C16 and C17, plus CS2, White Chips, White Mate WC5, Mix Super and Sugar Sand, all in 25 kg bags. Compare the photos to choose the colour and grain size you want. Fine sand suits bottom-dwelling fish such as corydoras and loaches, which like to sift through the substrate, while coarser gravel is easier to keep clean in general community tanks. As a rough guide, 25 kg of gravel fills around 15 to 17 litres, which gives about 4 cm of depth across a 90 x 45 cm tank. White stone can sometimes contain limestone, which raises hardness and pH; if you keep soft-water fish, drop a little vinegar on a sample, and if it fizzes, choose a different grade. Rinse all gravel thoroughly in a bucket until the water runs clear before adding it to the tank, then fill slowly over a plate to avoid clouding.
