JBL Sintomec

JBL Sintomec is a high-performance biological filter medium in ring form that helps keep aquarium water crystal clear by hosting beneficial bacteria on its large colonisation surface. It suits fresh and saltwater aquariums and is used in the second-last filter stage.

Using the filter rings

Sintomec rings are sintered glass with conical tunnel pores and a 5mm wall, which JBL says gives a surface of about 1,200m² per litre for beneficial bacteria. The ring shape lets water pass through the centre as well as around the outside, so it suits canister filters and filter compartments with steady flow. Always place the rings after a mechanical sponge, which keeps dirt from clogging the pores. New rings need several weeks to colonise fully, so keep existing media in place when you add them. If you ever replace them, swap no more than half at a time so the bacterial population is never lost all at once.

Good to know

Rinse it in tank water only during maintenance, so the beneficial bacteria survive.
