JBL Symec Filterwool Green XL is a coarse synthetic filter wool that traps the fine particles behind cloudy water in freshwater and marine aquariums. You pull off as much as you need, so it can be used in any type of aquarium filter. The wool is fully synthetic and leaves no residue, so it does not shed fibres or release pollutants into the tank. It goes in as the final filter stage and should come out once the water flow starts to drop. This XL pack contains 250g of green coarse wool, enough for many changes.

Where filter wool fits in

Filter wool works as a polishing layer, catching the fine particles that coarser sponges let through. In most filters that means placing it after the sponges and biological media, so the wool receives the cleanest water and clogs more slowly. Tear off a loose pad that covers the whole stage rather than packing it in tightly, as dense wool restricts flow. It is especially useful after stirring the substrate or rearranging decor, when the water turns cloudy. The 250g pack is enough for many changes, so keep the remainder in its bag, clean and dry, until needed.

Good to know

Replace the wool once the flow rate falls. Although it can be rinsed, JBL recommends swapping in fresh wool instead of reusing a rinsed pad.
