When and how to replace it

Replace the foam when it stays flattened after rinsing, starts to tear or crumble, or no longer springs back into shape, as worn foam lets dirt pass straight through. Between replacements, rinse and squeeze it in a bucket of water taken from the aquarium every few weeks, or sooner if the flow drops. Because the block also holds much of the filter’s beneficial bacteria, avoid replacing it at the same time as a big water change or substrate clean, feed lightly for a week or two afterwards, and test for ammonia and nitrite while the new foam settles in.

Good to know

Rinse the foam in tank water rather than tap water when cleaning so the bacteria colony survives.
