Reading and maintenance

A thermometer is most useful when you check it at the same time each day, so you notice gradual changes as well as sudden ones. Most tropical community tanks run at around 24-26°C, while marine tanks are usually held a degree or two higher and coldwater tanks cooler. A reading that keeps rising may point to a heater sticking on or a hot room, while a falling one may mean the heater has failed. Fit the sensor where water circulates freely but away from the heater, and replace the battery as soon as the display fades or flickers, so you are never left without a reading.
