Making the most of it

A blend of natural tones hides everyday debris better than a single bright colour, so the tank looks tidy between cleans, and it suits relaxed community set-ups and river-style layouts. The 8kg bag covers a modest floor area, so measure your tank and buy enough bags at once for an even mix across the whole base. Plants grow happily in gravel if you push fertiliser tabs near the roots of heavy feeders. During water changes, run a gravel vacuum through the top layer to lift trapped waste. It is intended for freshwater aquariums.

Good to know

Rinse the gravel thoroughly until the water runs clear, and spread it in an even layer about 5cm deep, sloping slightly higher towards the back.
