Polished Red Jasper 8kg

Polished Red Jasper is a decorative aquarium substrate made of polished red jasper stones with a smooth, glossy finish, supplied in an 8kg bag. It forms a natural-looking tank floor for freshwater aquariums, adds colour to the layout and gives beneficial bacteria plenty of surface to colonise.

Planning the layout

An 8 kg bag gives about a 5 cm layer over roughly a 40 x 25 cm floor, so most 60 cm aquariums will need two bags, and bigger tanks more. The smooth, polished pebbles are kind to fish that rest on or root through the bottom, and the deep red tone contrasts well with green plants and dark wood. It can also be used as a feature strip or border alongside plainer gravel. Rooted plants will need root fertiliser tablets pushed into the gravel near their roots.

Good to know

Rinse the gravel thoroughly until the water runs clear, and spread it in an even layer about 5cm deep, sloping slightly higher towards the back.
