Training safely over jumps
Because it is built to FCI competition standards, the hurdle lets you practise on the same kind of obstacle your dog will meet in trials, which makes the move from training to competition smoother. Young dogs should not jump at full height until they are fully grown, which can be well over a year in larger breeds, so start puppies with the bar on the ground or very low and focus on approach and take-off. Set the hurdle on level, non-slip ground such as grass or rubber matting, and check that the bar falls away easily if knocked, so a clipped jump does not lead to a fall. Raise the height in small steps and keep sessions short to protect joints.
