How to set up a safe home for a pet bird
Start with the biggest cage your space allows. Your bird should be able to spread both wings without touching the sides, and bar spacing must match its size: about 1 to 1.2 cm for budgies, canaries and finches, and wider, heavier bars for greys and other large parrots. Stand the cage against a wall in a room the family uses, out of the kitchen and away from AC vents, which push cold, dry air straight onto the bird. Birds have very sensitive lungs. Fumes from overheated non-stick pans can kill a bird quickly, and aerosol sprays, plug-in air fresheners and bakhoor smoke irritate their airways. Between May and September, never leave a cage on a balcony or in a sunny window, where heat above 40°C causes heatstroke fast.
